ICE BUBBLES

This series of images were captured in 2018 and 2023 in Tavan Bogd National Park, Western Mongolia, during the 100 mile winter migration of a nomadic family of Kazakh Eagle hunters and their herd. 

At this time of the year temperatures range between -30C to -50C and all bodies of water are frozen over. Lakes and rivers can be walked or driven over as the ice is about 120cm thick. The bubbles are methane gas being released from the organic matter at the bottom of the lake.

The entire lake becomes a beautiful abstract canvas of bubbles, cracks and sand speckles.
