Amish communities follow the Ordnung, a set of unwritten rules that guides daily life. These rules emphasize humility, separation from the modern world, and strong family and community ties. Amish families work the land with horse‑drawn equipment, gather for worship in homes, and maintain traditions that prioritize cooperation over individual preference.
They avoid owning cars, using public‑grid electricity, or keeping televisions, radios, and personal computers, believing that these technologies weaken community bonds. Clothing is modest and uniform, with men growing beards after marriage and women wearing head coverings and simple dresses. Formal schooling ends after eighth grade, after which children learn practical skills at home or on the farm.
These limits are not seen as restrictions but as a way to protect family life, preserve identity, and keep the community closely connected.
